With all the talk about game day experience and lack of student involvement, one area where we could vastly improve is getting the popular kids involved on game day on the field.
No offense to Saddle Tramps, but they are usually not representative of the most popular kids at Texas Tech. Yes, I was very involved in the Greek system while at Tech and am biased towards the such, but I never knew a single Saddle Tramp. Ever. Whether you like the Greek system or not, it has a huge influence on a good portion of the student body. And we should be getting those kids involved. Also, are red polos and black pants the best we can do? We are West Texas! Where are the cowboy boots and cowboy hats?
My recommendation - Take a page from UT’s Silver Spurs or TCU’s Rangers. Each year each fraternity gets to elect 2 Senior representatives. To be a Texas Tech Wrangler, or whatever the hell we want to call them. When I was at Tech (2006), there were about 10 big fraternities. So 2 individuals from each fraternity for a total of 20 Wranglers. Give them some sort of responsibility on the field, like taking care of the horse or something. Put them in jeans and a cowboy hat, just anything would be better than a basic red polo.
There are a laundry list of reasons this is a good idea. 1) Looks way cooler than Saddle Tramps on tv. A lot of times on tv they show the kids who spend all night camping out for the game. Not the cool decent looking guys and girls who wait until the last minute to ditch tailgate to walk into the game. 2) Is a better representation of the students at Tech. 3) It allows the Greek system to get involved in game day. When their friends are doing cool stuff for the games, their other friends are more likely to go. Participation by association of others. Friends follow their friends. 4) It unites those fraternities within a separate organization.
Say what you want, but I know a lot of popular and now very successful guys in their 30’s who were involved in the Texas Spurs or TCU Rangers. It was an honor to be selected by your fraternity to be a Silver Spur. I still dont know a single Saddle Tramp and I spent 4 years at Tech and was very very involved during my time there.
Give the Greeks more responsibility!
Cool (Texas Spurs and TCU Rangers)
Not Cool (Saddle Tramps)
I don’t know how to link photos, but just do yourself a favor and google each.
Also, sorry in advance if you are a Saddle Tramp. But it’s the truth.
