Not going super deep on this one. Did a deepish dive on Texas ITT.

This one is big for several reasons. First off, Tech needs a win after the craptastic showing in Orlando on Saturday and what better way to do that then beating a rival at home. Secondly, a win here likely locks Tech into tournament and even though the two remaining road games are against the basement of the conference.... I honestly don't trust Tech to take care of them at this point. Texas has been super up and down lately. They have proven they can beat anyone and have also proven they are capable of losing to anyone as well. They will likely sneak into the tournament so this would be a solid win. With a ton of unknowns coming into tomorrow on the injury side for Tech this game might be a toss-up. A few thoughts/key points:

  • Dylan Disu is scary - Disu has been on a hot streak in conference play and has been tearing through defenses. This is not a great matchup with Warren being unlikely to go. Tech's backup bigs will need to offer more than token defense inside on Disu. If not he will go for 20+.
  • Solid ball screen defense - Tech played Abmus very well in the first game and that needs to be repeated tomorrow night.
  • Guards, do something, anything - Tech cannot win this game if there is a repeat of the shit performance on Saturday by the two lead guards. Not rocket surgery but Tech's back court must outplay UT's.
  • Cause some havoc- Tech turned Texas over 14 times last meeting and only turned the ball over 9 times themselves. Need something similar.
  • Someone other than Kerwin and D5 hit threes - Tech has struggled to shoot the rock lately so that needs to change. If Chance comes back maybe that helps.
  • RJ/Kye/EY - Need to put together a game like TCU or KU. Not like UCF. Texas has a big front line.
  • Darrion should be able to get it rolling against UT.
  • Who plays? With Chance and Warren still banged up availability is anyone's guess at this point.
  • Final Thoughts - With the patchwork state of the roster right now Tech would need to put together a good shooting night to beat Texas (if Washington is not playing at a semi-normal level). That seems a bit dubious to me, but I hope they pull it out. Beating Texas to clinch a tourney spot would be very nice.
