I knew there'd been on going discussions for an eventual season 3 of True Detective, but didn't know that any concrete moves were being made

Could be interesting, and the early initial cast seems good. Also like that it basically going to be one director again (Jeremy Saulnier), along with Pizzolatto (writer, creator and show runner) sharing some directing duties.
I don't expect a return to or out doing of season 1, as I think the first season of True Detective is one of the best single seasons of TV ever made, but hopefully it's a massive step up from the very messy and uneven season 2 (which while it wasn't necessarily good, I do think it was also hyperbolically maligned). I think it's also a good sign that HBO has given Pizzolatto more time to write and put together a new season than last time. Basically Pizzolatto had basically a little less than a year to put together the second season and get it shot. And season 2 definitely felt rushed. Season 3 is slotted for sometime this year, at the earliest, which will have given Pizzolatto 3 years or a bit more between season 2 and 3.
Saulnier is a good directorial choice. His 2 most well known films are Blue Ruin and Green Room. Blue Ruin was a critically well received, cult hit, gritty outstanding revenge film. Green Room was also a critical darling and more successful financially, but I didn't like it near as much as Blue Ruin. Still the directing was top notch. I think his style will be good for True Detective, based on the vague description of what they want to do with the third season.
Anyway, I feel optimistic about it; anyone else?
