Spent the last four days in and around the hill country and took in 3 BBQ joints. Salt Lick, Black's in Lockhart, and Leeroy & Lewis.
First off, Salt Lick is garbage. Feels like blasphemy to say that out loud but there was nothing impressive about this place. Brisket was dry and had no bark, turkey was meh and sides were forgettable. At this point, feels like they're getting by on their brand recognition and heritage versus actual product. Won't be back.
Leeroy & Lewis is a food truck near down town Austin. Had brisket, pork hash, beef cheeks, spicy refried beans and a tea. Had never tried beef cheeks until this place and it was better than the brisket by far. Perfect bark, great smoke and moist. Pork hash was incredible and brisket was decent. Would highly recommend if you haven't tried this place before.
Last stop was the original Black's in Lockhart on the way back home. Had brisket, turkey, beans, green beans and Mac and cheese. Worth the stop and the brisket stole the show. Again, great bark, very moist and good smoke. Turkey was moist, had great flavor and smoke ring. All the sides were on point.
