Had it at the Petroleum Club, hosted by the TTAA of Houston. Very nice place. Ronnie Hammonds (Tech Regent) was the speaker.
-Tech is about to open an official Tech campus in Costa Rica.
-Ronnie is pushing Tech to open a "Mental Health Research Facility". We'd be the first University in Tx to do that I believe. He was very passionate about it, and it certainly is needed in this country.
- Vet school was brought up. He said John Sharpe and his band of Nazis (basically) were threatening to stop it. The Board decided to hold off for 2 more years, but we are determined to get one.
-Tech's funding was cut 16 million this year by the state, but that we're going to be getting more Federal funding for research hopefully. He mentioned how tough the Tier 1 status was to get, and said research dollars is the name of the game.
-Mentioned how much he respects Kliff for having character, unlike Baylor. He said Kliff made the decision to leave his OC duties in order to coach the defense on his own. Also, our baseball team is great.
-No plans to "merge" or acquire any school systems right now, but didn't rule it out in the future.
-Was asked about rankings. He said it is definitely something they talk about a lot, and it sounded like we didn't put money in the right pockets for a couple of the latest rankings. They are actively trying to improve that though.
-Mentioned how tough it was to match UT and aTm because of the Permanent College Fund (oil money) they were given years ago. He said our donations have continued to increase, and was very proud of our alumni for stepping up.
- Overall, great event. I sat with Ronnie and his 2 brothers (one was a Tech grad, other was UT). I was happy to hear how well our school was doing academically, despite what some may think. Rawls College got a new Dean, and he seemed very happy about the pick.
Great stuff, Wreck'em.
