There seems to be no denying that Gibbs can recruit well, as long as he is able to do it his way. He wants to see in person every kid before offering. This has seemed to increase his hit rate and has made signing some lesser rated recruits more palatable, as they have proven to be talents we can use.
Here's the problem with this...it is time and labor intensive. He has to physically go to the kid, time the visit so that he can observe him in practice or in a game. And not every visit ends up being a kid we want...that's why he does this, so he can weed out the ones that might fool us with game film.
Trying to do this during the season means 20 hour days every day of the week...and I believe it is physically impossible for him to both coordinate the defense and visit every potential recruit between August and December...the prime months for recruiting and closing on prospects.
I don't know how he is going to reconcile this dilemma, but he seems to be trying to get a lot of this done in the spring, judging by offers already extended. Now how that cuts into his spring training regimen, and perhaps more importantly, how well he can hold up to the demands of doing all this work in person is the real question. There's a reason no other program I know of does it this way.
