- Felt the game was really decided by our OL and DL. Most specifically, Paul Stawarz and Mych Thomas, who I felt were offensive and defensive MVPs respectively.
- Stawarz gives us more mobility at center than last year. Really graded out high. Only had him losing 1 snap, winning a bunch and neutral on the rest. Anderson lost a couple more snaps, but it also might have been the best true freshman performance since whoever Louis Vasquez destroyed in his first game. Right side in general looked strong, especially in the run game.
- Hines blew two assignments in the 1st two series giving up sacks, then settled in nicely. Didn't note Akanonmu as a weak spot. Significant drop in athleticism from the ones to twos with this unit.
- Thomas dominated virtually every snap whether single or double teamed. Nothing was going to happen on the ground with he and Washington in the game. McCann was a lot shakier. Yontz looked alright against inferior competition. Significant drop in depth between units.
- Got more pressure on the QB with 3 and 4 man fronts than I realized initially. Almost every pass was forced early, which led to most of the errant passes and drops. I had Gilmore down for 5 opportunities rushing the passer in a 3 or 4 man fronts and he clocked in 4 QB pressures. No answer for the undermanned FCS program. He was also a stud in run defense with his length. I believe him to be a very good talent that would log snaps at any of the Big 12 programs I watched this weekend. Tony Jones looked good in his role as well. Maybe I will finally understand this rush end position.
- SDE was platooned by Barnes, Howard and Hill with role player results. Hopefully, we're getting enough from other positions that it's all we need. Solid against the run and maintains containment responsibilities on passing downs? Probably should take it. Thought Howard and Hill flashed a bit more, but none were a weak spot.
- Brooks and Allen looked great as they didn't get touched much. Cleaned up virtually everything outside a couple of bad calls we had into the wrong play with our front. Brooks and Taylor combined for a really nice 4th and 1 stop, which is the equivalent of a turnover.
- Appeared that Sykes got the call over Coleman and showed us why. Guy was in position all night long and the breaks go your way when that happens. They did.
- Morgan looked to be the best CB by a significant margin. If Sykes is the man at NB, then maybe we'll throw Coleman in the mix with Polite-Bray and Smith at the other corner.
- Dorsey and Johnson were strengths. Dorsey really showed the ability to help out with run defense. Bizarre seeing a #15 fly into the screen without ricocheting off a thigh pad.
