I enjoy all this car stuff. There is a fellow named Steve Austin who puts on Trips to the Historic Events.

I have been on several and met a famous driver and we have remained friends for 12 years. Went to Historic Le Mans, Historic Millie Mila, etc. He invited me to his event in Wisc called Road America and I had dinner with several famous folks, I was at the very end of table being a no body.

So what is the most beautiful F 1 race car. You may not have heard of it. It is the D 50 Lancia later the D 50 Ferrari. Also look at the mid to late 50s Mercedes Benz. There was a terrible crash in 55 or 56 and ALL RACING was stopped for one or 2 years. Racing cars in Europe is like SEC Football. Lots of bad blood from the War.

The friend who turned down Ferrari for F 1 was British great, Brian Redman. His book was book of the year a few years back . He will sign it.
Later he won world Chap for Ferrari in Sports Cars with Mario. We e mail every few weeks, he sends me things because I love this old stuff.

He won a lot for Porsche in 917 and drove for Steve Mc Queen in the movie Le Mans. His favorite race car was the Porsche 908 where he won the Targa.

His favorite team was with Midland racer Jim Hall who owns Rattlesnake Race track near Midland.
Brian said Hall told him if car broke, dont get out, to many snakes, we will come get you. I was there 2 times , must have been in colder weather because I saw no warning of snakes.

Lubbock airport had a race when I was a boy and I was there , my Dad had a Jag 140,later always Porsche. Our local leader of Sport Car Club was killed at Rattlesnake and another driver from Mexico was killed so they just stopped it.

The fastest track is Spa in Belgium. Redman held the record of average of 167 for many years.

Back to Midland, My best friend is ex airline capt and offered to be on USA Soaring Team but could not because he had to fly. He landed a sailplane the track and Jim Hall later gave him a few fast laps .

Speaking of Sailplanes, I was co founder of a club in Hamilton. The little town now has 90 members. If you pass by stop and watch. 2 of our students are now professional pilots , one in Alaska.
Lubbock had a huge glider operation during the War. My Cousin sent me a book on it. Largest Glider Training School during the war on East Side of the Lubbock airport today. Some of the old Military building are still over there as of 5 years ago. Hub City
