The first home meet for Tech in 2 years will see virtually everyone on the roster competing. There ARE also 5 multi-athletes debuting in Tucson at the Jim Click Invitational. Those multi-athletes got started yesterday (Thursday) and will finish up today. A few field events will also happen today in Lubbock, with the vast majority of events happening on Saturday.
MULTIS -- Callie Jones is off to a big start in the heptathlon, with PR after PR and she is in 3rd place overall. Callie is a strong 2nd day heptathlete (she has been a national qualifier in the open javelin for Southern Mississippi) and she should end up in contention for a national berth with a good 2nd day. Kaylee Hinton was not quite as strong, but she has a solid day 1 and could also be in national contention. On the men's side, Cole Whatley withdrew after the first event. Both Fynn Zenker, in his first decathlon for Tech, and Kale Mauritsen, in his first-every decathlon ever, both had solid first days. Not great, but solid.
FRIDAY - it would be good to see Werner Bouwer have a big day in the javelin. In the Abilene meet, he barely fouled on what would have been a PR throw. A good throw for Werner would be in the 225-240 range. Gabe Oladipo had that big throw last week of 192 feet in the discus. It would be huge to see him throw in the 194-198 range. I fully expect to see Gabe throwing over 200 feet this year (Duke Kicinski won the national meet for Tech in 2019 with a throw of 203 feet).
SATURDAY - there are some key things to look for on Saturday, but I will post about that on Saturday morning.
I will try to get updates on this thread on each day with the meets being spread out over 3 days.
