Tough one, but one that I believe will be somewhat easy to turn the page from. Some quick thoughts on the bowl loss to Arkansas.
Tech’s 2024 defense ends how it started: Texas Tech’s defense from week one and two showed up in bowl season. The Red Raiders were torched in the air and the extremely mobile quarterback Taylen Green caused plenty of issues for Tech. It was akin to Maverick McIvor and John Mateer, and many others who have played their best game against the unit. Just not good enough all around, despite flashes from Cofield, Rigsby, Smith and others, and you can see why Tech has made changes on that side of the ball. It’s a big offseason for that unit and new DC Shiel Wood.
Hammond up and down: As with a true freshman quarterback in his first career start, Hammond had an up and down night. I thought that the raw skills from Hammond were there, the best zip on the ball that Tech has had all year from any quarterback. However, the interception, and some of the moments, were a touch too much for Hammond and first time play caller Juice Johnson.
Young RBs show promise: It was a fun night in this aspect for Tech. J’Koby Williams and Cam Dickey showed some really, really strong promise. Dickey looks like the regeneration of Tahj Brooks with his build, patience and short area quickness while Williams looks like the explosive, one-cut back that Tech has been desperate for during the McGuire era.
Conyers, Douglas with impactful performances: Really impressed with Conyers tonight, obviously didn’t have the best statistical output but you can really see his strengths with the ball in his hands. Douglas had a few tough drops, an issue that has bit him a few times this season but made up for it. He is very exciting with the ball in his hands and made a highlight catch that pushed him over the century mark.
Tough one, but ultimately it is hard to put a lot of stock into this one. Without coordinators, it was evident, a fact that I did not give nearly enough credence to coming into this one. Sour taste to end the season, but that’s a wrap.
