This one was over at the half, and for good reason. Tech put together it’s best effort overall and was honed in defensively against the worst team that’s rolled into Lubbock early on this season.

Here’s some thoughts off the first action with Tech’s point guards in the mix…

Toppin continues to dominate Mountain West competition: Toppin with his first double-double of the season tonight. He had a really, really strong game offensively. Creating near the block throughout the night and using his touch with the baby hook to get north of 20 points on the scoresheet. He continues to impress as a Red Raider, and frankly looks like a much-improved version of himself relative to his freshman season at New Mexico.

Anderson, Hawkins add fresh legs & playmaking ability offensively: The guard pair that hasn’t been available up to this point this season finally were able to take the top off on their Texas Tech careers. Both provided sparks on the offensive end with their distribution and scoring ability and it was a welcome sight to see this team at close to full strength. I’m really excited for this pair. Anderson looks like a legit freshman with a bright future ahead of him based on tonight’s performance.

Red Raiders locked in defensively in first half: On the same note, Anderson and Hawkins presence really helped in this regard. Whether it be a combination of Tech being much more active and sounder defensively, having fresher legs overall, the PG’s ability to guard the ball, or Wyoming just not being very good, it all equaled a dominant half on that end of the floor. The Cowboys had 15 turnovers at the break with just 19 shots attempted from the field.

Tech lacks boards at times: Pretty much the only knock on the night. Tech was pushed on the boards by a team that is not great on them. I really think that you’re going to have to improve overall here as we head into the meat of the schedule, but I thought Toppin had his best night in this regard, which was nice to see.

Red Raiders ultimately take care of business: Not much more you can ask for with a performance like this, the Red Raiders showed some improvement where things have lacked thus far this season and beat a MWC team handedly. Hopefully it will continue to be the case, as more meaningful games are just around the corner. Tech wraps up the homestand Monday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
