A very disappointing loss to open Big 12 play for Grant McCasland’s crew, one that exposed flaws that have been here for two months now. Frustrating outing against a middle of the road team in the conference analytically but a fun rally to make it close.

Some quick takeaways…

Tech out athlete-ed defensively: This was the story, really the only one. Tech couldn’t guard the ball, as has been the case all season long, but it was made worse by Darrion Williams inability to guard Keyshawn Hall. Williams, or Toppin, when on Hall, had no answer for his athleticism and it led to a massive day for the UCF wing.

Toppin strong in return: JT has been out for over a month and made his December debut on the final day of the year. He had a strong day offensively for the most part, winning his matchups down low and being the player who he was in November. Wasn’t personally a fan of the three attempts, but it was a decent day overall.

McMillian, Williams struggle for the majority offensively: Tech’s first half offensive effort was strong without the presence of D5 or Chance as the scorers that they’ve been all year. Williams had a really rough day offensively and Chance was bottled up by UCF’s size. Tech found offense in the first half from Overton and the bigs as Federiko came into his own near the horn.

Tech rallies in second half after being dead in the water: Tech started 3-12 to open the second half and felt like the bottom had come out trailing by 18 points with under ten to play. Tech was able to rally behind a tightened defensive effort and a nice 7-0 run getting in transition. Toppin was absolutely key in these minutes, taking over down low & defensively. Darrion woke up with a few buckets in the paint. Chance’s three from the corner was also a massive shot, but the final shot was a brutal one. Too little, too late.
