That was a win versus one of the worst teams in the nation. Good to get it done before you hop on a cross-country flight to Brooklyn tomorrow. Let’s jump into some thoughts.

Darrion Williams, The Savior: This was an ugly first half from the Red Raiders despite the scoreline, and Williams was the major bright spot for Tech. With 14 points on 6/8 shooting, Williams was one of the only answers for Tech against the Pine Bluff zone, that was giving Tech fits throughout.

Toppin, others, struggle vs. the zone: As mentioned above, the Red Raiders struggled to find answers versus the zone, and the Red Raiders struggles from deep didn’t help matters. UAPB did a nice job of mixing it up and it gave Tech some fits early. Tech found some rhythm offensively and eventually was able to create some separation.

Red Raiders still searching for defensive answers: Tech’s defensive ability was once again a struggle against the Golden Lions, allowing dribble penetration and easy buckets on back-cuts at times. Obviously not what you’re looking for on the heels of a strong showing against Wyoming last week, but it’s got to improve later in the week. Also thought that Tech wasn’t great on the defensive boards, but the numbers don’t really reflect that.

McMillian showing strides: Chance has continued to show strides. I think he has been Tech’s best off-ball guard through four games this year. He’s always been athletic and he has improved from an offensive standpoint, able to create his own shots and score going downhill, a very welcome development from last season.

Overton with his best showing as a Red Raider: Was impressed with Overton’s shot tonight. Felt like he shot the ball the best he has to this point while being able to play some solid defense on the night. I think his ceiling is pretty high, so I’m hopeful he can continue to improve as the season rolls along.

Obviously not a ton of conclusions drawn against this level of competition, and it didn’t feel like Tech played very well but got a massive result. Odd one, kind of as expected, hopefully Tech can look a little sharper against St. Joe’s on Thursday.
