Fat pensions for outgoing lawmakers

More than a dozen members of Congress were defeated on Tuesday night. But taxpayers will still have to keep sending most of them checks.

617 former members of Congress collecting pensions worth an average of $60,250 a year, or about $5,000 a month. The total cost of those pensions comes to $37.2 million a year.
