So the concern that Wells won't be able to recruit Texas because he doesn't know Texas has been thrown up here a lot. The thought is that the coaching staff doesn't know Texas, so I figured I'd look at who the coaching staff actually is. Here's what I found:
David Yost, OC: Coached with Gary Pinkel from the time he took over Mizzou to when they left the Big 12. Also coached 3 years with Leach at WSU, and they give a lot of Texas offers out. Guy knows Texas.
Jovon Bouknight, Outside WRs: Coached that position group for ten years at USU. Probably hasn't done much in Texas.
Steve Farmer, OL: Joined the staff in 2016. Before that coached at Louisiana Monroe for 6 years. And he had another stint there from 2004-2008. Guy probably knows Texas fairly well.
DeAndre Smith, RB: Coached at North Carolina, Purdue, Syracuse, New Mexico, Illinois, UNLV, Miami (Ohio), and Northern Illinois. Probably some experience in from two years in New Mexico, but not a ton. Guy had been a journeyman it looks like.
Luke Wells, TE/Inside WRs: 4 years at Iowa State, 6 years at ULM, a lot of time as a high school coach in Denton. Plenty of Texas experience.
Keith Patterson, DC: 4 years at Arizona State, 2 at WVU, time at Pittsburgh. Coached at Tulsa from 2003-2010. And 16 years as a high school coach in OK and TX.
So, to my eye...other than Bouknight and Smith, the other coaches we know are coming have plenty of experience in Texas. Sure, there's plenty to get up to speed on, but they aren't going to come in here and have no idea what the landscape looks like.
