Some thoughts on what we saw over the weekend from Texas Tech baseball against Gonzaga.

Overall, the team put together a really nice first four games of the season and pretty much all went well, and I don’t want to put a ton of stock into almost anything we saw this weekend, or for the most part of the next month. Just my baseball mind, I guess.

Pitching:

This has been well mentioned on here, but Kyle Robinson didn’t have his best stuff. He wasn’t able to land the off-speed for strikes and the Zags were touching him up with the fastball.

Brendan Girton looked the part. The fastball was electric, and he commanded the slider really well. I really believe he is your best arm from a stuff perspective, and it seems to be that he’s stretched out enough to start. Almost certain that he’ll crack the rotation at some point, maybe sooner than later.

Mason Molina had an excellent outing. Five strong innings where he was buckling hitters with middle-middle fastballs. Just an excellent afternoon for the sophomore, hopefully more to come, because you need it.

Taber Fast looked solid, wasn’t able to land the off-speed as well as he was able to during camp, but still turned in two quality innings. Impressive arm for a true freshman.

Bo Blessie was as advertised. The stuff was excellent, and he turned in six innings of one-hit ball on 66 pitches. Blessie sat in the mid-90s but mixed the slider and curve well. Just a great outing.

Trendan Parish’s stuff wasn’t there, the command wasn’t either and it led to an early exit. I always thought he works better out of the pen, velo usually ticks up a bit, but it was good to see him throw since he got hurt last year.

Damian Bravo, the two-way freshman, looked good in the ninth on Monday. Stuff was there, fastball in the low-90s to high-80s. He made three hitters look silly in his inning.

Hitting:

I don’t have a ton of concerns on the hitting core through the first four. The guys went out and put together quality at bats against a tough pitching staff and put up a lot of runs. These guys are damn good, super exciting.

Hudson White had a tough weekend, but I’m not buying any stock into it. Process is all that matters at this time, and his is still there, they’ll fall.

I was really impressed with Nolen Hester, just a tough at bat for any pitcher. He talked about it postgame Saturday that he’s just trying to put together a quality at bat and get to first base any way that he can. Exciting stuff.

I was impressed with Gage Harrelson, he fit right in at the top of the lineup for a power five program. He looked good in the field and the speed on the bases is a killer. So happy he got to campus. Hit a nice home run on Sunday, too.

Austin Green and Gavin Kash had big weekends with homers. Green’s emergence is something that’s quite welcome, very exciting to see.

Ty Coleman had a big weekend, a fun sight. A big day on Sunday with five hits and two for extra bases was the highlight of the weekend for the hitting core.

Owen Washburn struggled and it seemed as if he got away from his process as the weekend went on. I asked Tadlock about it, and he seemed to agree on Monday. Washburn will still have plenty of opportunities in the lineup and I personally think that there isn’t a whole lot to worry about, he’ll get going.

This team is going to play a lot of meaningless baseball over the next week, another 36 innings against a team that won eight games in the Summit League last year, but Gonzaga was a quality opponent and these games will mean something come resume time.

I’m heading out of town this weekend, so I’ll be absent for this weekend set with Western Illinois but there isn’t a ton to be gathered, especially when the weekend rotation may be different than what we saw this weekend.
