Just as they did last year at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas Tech fans basically took over the BOK Center in Tulsa for the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"They carried us tonight," senior grad transfer guard Matt Mooney said. "Ever since I set foot at Texas Tech, the fan support is just different there. They get it. The support us. They're loud. They're not fair-weather. For them to travel from Lubbock ... we appreciate it so much."

Local star shines late: After a slow start, Buffalo guard C.J. Massinburg scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, including three 3-pointers.

The senior from South Oak Cliff finished his career with 1,990 points, to rank second on the school's all-time scoring, 14 points short of Javon McCrea, who played from 2010-14.

"The emotions are kind of all over the place you know," Massinburg said. "I just want to thank the city of Buffalo for allowing me to come in and just [have] an impact on you guys. And you guys have embraced me and loved me, and I loved you guys right back."

Culver cool down: Thanks to its defense and rebounding, Tech didn't need a huge scoring effort from Jarrett Culver.

The 6-6 sophomore who had scored 86 points in his last three games, still led in scoring for 24th time this season with 16 points and added 10 points and three rebounds.

Hot start: While Texas Tech's defense won the game with a stretch spanning the first and second halves, the Red Raiders started strong as well.

Tech led Buffalo 10-2 then 19-6 just nine minutes into the game.

"It was an awful start," Buffalo coach Nate Oats said. "It's not how you want to start a game."

Rivalry renewed: Texas Tech has little history with Michigan, the team that it will meet in the Sweet 16 Thursday in Anaheim.

The two teams have played twice, in 1978 and 1983 at the Sun Bowl Classic, with Tech winning two tight games.

But Tech fans still remember the last meeting against a John Beilein team. In the 2005 Sweet 16, West Virginia, coached by Beilein, outlasted Tech 65-60 as 6-11 Kevin Pittsnogle scored 22 points. Ronald Ross, now a graduate assistant on the Tech staff, led the Red Raiders with 16 points.
