Are dishes supposed to be gunked up prior to going into the dishwasher?

Or should they go in well rinsed like this, with no gunk on them?
I'm a big believer in no-gunk dishes going into the dishwasher. Am I on solid ground here or should I give in to the ignorant masses and load up the dishwasher with all kinds of gross crud on the dishes?
Have soft water and use those pod things as soap.
