I’m just spiff-balling here but I’m guessing that the scheme they ran against us is what we are going to see from other opponents the rest of the way…esp once we get into past-season play.
Specifically, it appeared to me that they did four things really well.
1. They pushed us off our spots, especially our guards. They especially went after Chance . There was no room given for him to do his thing - they were pushing him back a good three to four feet out than what he’s used to getting.
2. They hammered at us on the inside all night long and seemed to expose how little bulk we have down low. I felt like I was watching NBA post players going in on us all night.
3. They physically attacked us- banged us all night long, all over the court - especially once they realized the refs weren’t going to stop them. It seemed to rattle us more than usual.
4. They made it really hard for Chance to be Chance and to a lesser extent, Elijah. Pretty sure they were willing to let someone else beat them nut not those two guys. They seemed to put all their planning into shutting down the effectiveness of our guard play.
The good news is that UA is built for that kind of play. Most of the remaining teams will not have the size nor skill to pull off what they did. The bad news is that the teams we will face in post season will.
What was really missing Saturday night - and it seems to happen more than it should - is D5 not taking the game over when it’s required. I’m not certain why it feels like to me that he’s always hanging out a bit on the outside of the action. Not always but more than maybe he once did. We clearly need him going to the bucket in games like that one.
I’m not sure we can pull off a NC without continued production from the 3 line. We are going to have to score a ton every game because teams with big, carrier sized post players are going to try and hammer us.
One positive note - I’m guessing the officiating will tighten up, esp in post season play.
A second positive note - in spite of UA’s game plan, Christian Anderson almost blew it all up.
A third positive note - I’m sure our coaching staff already has a response to what UA did.
Just my 2 cents on a slow Monday afternoon.
