According to documents obtained through an open records request, Texas Tech and Zac Spavital signed a new, two-year contract this week that will pay him $280,000 annually. He would be owed the remaining unpaid salary if the university terminates him without cause. Spavital earned $230,000 in 2017, so this new deal raises his salary by $50,000. Spavital signed the contract on March 1, Kirby Hocutt signed it on March 5 and university president Lawrence Schovanec signed it on Wednesday.
The university and new special teams coordinator Adam Scheier have not yet finalized a contract, but he has signed an offer letter for a two-year deal worth $250,000 in annual salary. Scheier's annual salary is the same as what Joe Robinson earned for the same position in 2017. This deal was offered in writing on Feb. 27 and signed by Scheier the next day.
Other new deals that have been signed this offseason:
Kevin Johns: Two-year deal worth $380,000 annually (Eric Morris made $260,000 in 2017)
Brandon Jones: Two-year deal worth $325,000 annually (Jones made $225,000 in 2017)
David Gibbs: Two-year deal worth $650,000 annually (Gibbs made $550,000 in 2017)
Clay Jennings: $250,000 salary (Karl Scott made $225,000 in 2017)
Clay McGuire: $280,000 salary (Jabbar Juluke made $240,000 in 2017)
Brett Dewhurst: $150,000 salary (Texas Tech did not have a 10th assistant coach in 2017)
In total, if my math is right, Texas Tech is committing $2.98 million in salary to its assistant coaches this season - assuming Terrance Jamison's and Emmett Jones' salaries remain the same from 2017 - which is up $585,000 from last season. Half of the program's assistant coaches - Spavital, Scheier, Johns, Jones and Gibbs - are currently signed to two-year contracts.
