Gibbs talked about asking for calls and asking for calls you can't defend. I think most OCs are calling verticals against man in this league. Our coach seems like a fan of them. We seem to defend a lot of them.
Gibbs said college teams can't play bump and run 60 times a game, unless you have Bama players. So I went to look at some stats (Big XII) and we aren't much worse than TCU or Baylor.
In fact we are all at the bottom except UT, KSU and WV. I would argue that UT has Bama type players and KSU and WV are mostly zone defenses. WV actually played pretty well against both. KSU got whipped by TCU but it was mostly on the ground and defense.
UT gave up zero passes over 50 yards last year and only six plays for more than 40 all year, 24 for BU, Texas Tech gave up 30 of those plays, 44 for TCU & 18 for Houston.
Anyways, I have no point. I'm just glad we are back to trying to make QBs execute instead of "getting off the field." And that Nelson won't have to play with his back to the QB anymore. I got tired of screaming play the ball.
Also, TCU pretty much only gives up big plays. They are first in yards/carry (nation) and only Texas gives up fewer short passes (0-20 yards). Houston did too but I'm not sure that matters.
