Alright it's been a while since I've made a thread on RRS (Especially since I'm not a student anymore and cant dish the On Campus Tidbits like I did ), but let's give this a shot.
Anyone that knows me knows that I focus on Defense first. How your defense if viewed is more or less how your team is viewed and as a former player myself, I ought to know. As such our D Line has been a black eye for this team in terms of depth/talent/fortitude for years. Next years D-Line from this years signing day(including guys that were on the team at the time or were on scholarship) was going to look like:
DE: Moore, Barnes, Gilmore
DT: Fehoko, Washington
NT: Outlaw, Anthony Smith
No depth at all and a big problem for a coach in Gibbs who wants to run four man fronts from time to time. We all got on the staff's case for whiffing hard on recruiting more DLineman in the last class (and I was definitely one of them) because of our lack of success in pulling in some bulls from the HS level lately. Case in point, we have only signed 6 HS D-Lineman in the last 3 years. 3 are converted from offense (Moore, Washington, and Outlaw) and only 1 that played D-line in HS is from Texas (Gilmore)..... Ouch!
So we said that we need to hit DL recruiting out of the park for this recruiting cycle to get ready for next year and the future and if we ink all of the people we have committed, count those put on scholarship, and bring along the transfers added to the mix, here's our new situation on the DL (In case we run a base 4 man front);
DE: Mitchell, Moore, Gilmore, Jones, Henderson
DT: Fehoko, Washington, Pipkins, Jackson
DT: Outlaw, Thomas, McCann, Wallace,
DE: Hill, Barnes, Nunez, Miller, Deshay,
Hello Beautiful.
That looks much better coming off of the bus huh? Of course we still have to ink em and get em here. However, that looks like something you can build a future defensive team's foundation on. Plus, I count 5 of these new DL coming from Texas. Big Deal going forward. I say we need to keep reeling in numbers like this every year and that this is all Gibbs doing. Lets hope that this year is a sign of things to come with the experienced line we have now. Guns Up Fellas!
