I know Beard loves it here and is all about winning. The fans showing up means a lot to him and he is building something special.
I also don’t want UCLA or UT to try to throw down a crazy contract that cracks the door because the number is so much higher.
Beard is making very good money right now at $3.1MM (equal with Shaka) through 2023. That puts him in the top 25 but assuming we continue to have another great run and possibly a conference championship, I think we need to get close to $4MM. Huggins is at $3.8 and that would put him very near the top in the conference behind Self.
If you include Beard’s Arkansas Little Rock team his record is 156-55 for a 74% winning percentage. That’s outstanding especially in context of transition years and the Big 12 quality and will keep going up with this year’s team.
I am a little wary of extending coaches too long because of moral hazard but when you have a truly elite coach you have to be lock him up. See ISU. Despite being a terrible program they have made it almost impossible for their coach to leave.
If I’m Kirby, I’d try getting him to sign an 8 year deal around $4MM a year and that is going to dramatically reduce anyone that could try to make a run at him including UT. I think Shaka will get one more year unless UT implodes (which could happen), so it’s a good time to get this done. I know Chris is happy but there are a lot of national writers talking about Beard and he is on everyone’s want list so why not remove all doubt.
