Unfortunately as the hours quickly pass this weekend, it seems increasingly likely that college football will not kick off in September and that it most likely will he pushed back until after Christmas or into the new year if at all.
While thinking about potential weekends the season might could kick off for a Spring season, I began to think about all of the good bowl games that come on the week following Christmas and into New Years weekend.
If the season is pushed back I thought it would be cool if the season could begin on the Thursday following Christmas, which is New Years Eve. Follow that up with games on New Year’s Day and on Saturday (Jan. 2) along with one prime-time game on Monday night (Jan 4th). Given that I think all P5 schools are required to schedule at least one P5 non-conference game each season, that could be a weekend to ask the P5 schools to schedule those premier games for a big kickoff weekend.
The typical CFB season runs approximately 19 weeks from opening weekend until the National Title game. In this scenario, you could extend either the season or the bowl season, possibly a mixture of both by two weeks (21 weeks if my math is correct) and wrap up the season with the national title game on Memorial Day weekend in May.
I’m sure there are a million holes that could be poked into that scenario but just thought I’d post for conversation purposes.
Thoughts other than the pandemic sucks?
