I went to see Monterey and Chavez at Amarillo High tonight for the district title. I knew I was in trouble when I turned off Bell Street to AHS and it was a sea of cars.
I ended up parking four blocks away on the other side of the Activity Center on a residential street. I got their 20 minutes before tip off and a friend who was there 45 minutes before saved a seat.
It was packed — 2,100. They had to turn people away and they were not happy. I’m sure most, like me, came to see Chavez either for the last time or first time.
Amarillo High won, 71-65. They just had the more balanced team. All five starters were in double figures.
Chavez had 30 but she struggled as much as someone who scores nearly half your team’s points can. She was really hounded. I don’t know actual shooting percentage but gonna guess around 33%.
What will help at the next level is she won’t be almost the entire focus of the opposing defense. She certainly can create, and I thought forced some shots but her forcing shots is probably better than some of her teammates open looks.
Just one game I get it against a better team. I can see where any university would want her, but is she worth the rumored $1.5 million-plus it would take to get her?
I’m not sure she is, but it doesn’t matter because she’s going to get it and I guess that makes her worth it.
