I think the powers that be (Bowl organizers, who pay school ADs & Presidents with gifts, trips, and even cash) and lord over the college football scene, are not wanting to lose the money maker that is the bowl system. But at this point the stat shaping is obvious, and to not see it, your head is in the sand.
They know that the numbers will be down by having the semi-finals on NYE. But they will use the numbers out of context as to why there should not be a traditional playoff for CFB. They will use it to not expand the field beyond 4 (maybe 8).
The fact that the schools are on the hook for tickets sold to bowl games and must purchase tickets for their bands, which in turn provide the halftime entertainment for free, is ludicrous.
CFB teams should be playing for home field to host until the final game. The home school would have ZERO problem selling tickets to such an event weekend after weekend, also lowering the travel cost by having only one school traveling.
The bowl games are a sham. Especially with the SEC hand-picking their opponents. Notice that the best thing to happen to the SEC this year was not having to face Baylor, TCU (or even WVU.) The bowl system is a money loser on the whole for the universities. Why should all of the D1 schools' supporters keep turning over money with higher ticket prices, so that the end point is a gigantic payout to bowl executives? They don't even invest in an inkling of the student athlete's welfare or cover any education costs. Yet, they are guaranteed a huge payout, with no risk, on the backs of the universities and their supporters, and in several instances, even tax payers and volunteers.
The regular season should be to play for a playoff spot and home field advantage.
Anyhow, it's all engineered and planned. In spite of the seriously low numbers, the CFB has announced that they are committed to keeping the semi-final matches on NYE next year. Dumb.
