The Red Raider Confidential is sponsored by Cardinal's Sports Center. If you need Texas Tech gear or Under Armour apparel, the best place to go in our opinion is Cardinal's -- they have a tremendous location in Lubbock (Slide and S. Loop 289), a store in Plano and a fantastic selection on their website.

Matt and I have both spoken with several guys we know that cover recruiting in Texas that are up in Oregon at the Elite 11 and the Opening this week, and every one of them to a man has raved about how much they like Jett Duffey, both on and off the field.

One such writer I spoke with is Inside Texas editor Justin Wells, and he's actually been covering Jett for some time, building a relationship like we have with the Mansfield Lake Ridge QB. After seeing what he's done so far this week, Wells is happy to see the young signal caller succeed.

"Jett Duffey is the type of kid I couldn't be more happy for. I met Jett when he had no offer, and I actually broke his first two offers with McNeese State and SFA. Seeing his progression just warms my heart, because I know Kingsbury is getting a very hard working, diligent guy that's going to do exactly what he's told, and to make it even better, the kid is putting on some muscle. That kid is becoming a man, and I'm always going to be a big fan of his."

Seeing that he's seen Duffey play and compete so much, Wells has a very good grasp on the type of player the QB is. He's seen great things from him this week, and he likes what Duffey brings to the table.

"What I've seen from Jett is what I've seen from him the last nine months, except better. He throws a clean ball, and what I mean by that is that there's no wasted motion, no wasted energy, and since he's smaller - and he's growing - but since he was small, his feet are always going to be good. He throws a real clean ball, and he doesn't make the same mistake twice. I think that's what I like the most about him. He's going to listen to what theses coaches tell him, he's going to store it in the back of his mind, and he's not going to make a mistake again, and that's going to be dangerous for the rest of the Big 12, because he's not going to have a big expectation attached to him. He could win this whole contest, and no how good he is, he's not going to get the recognition he deserves. They're going to say he's too small, and you know what? That's probably going to be ok. That's going to keep him motivated and keep him pushing. He's going to have to throw 35 touchdowns at Tech before people start giving him credit, and that's crap. He's a damn good little passer."

Wells likes the mental makeup of the senior QB, too.

"He's got the intangibles. These days, there's so much put into the physical stature and measurables. It's taken for granted when these guys are good kids, good leaders, and make good decisions. Those are the guys you know you're not going to get a phone call at 2 in the morning about. Jett Duffey, Kliff Kingsbury will sleep like a baby the years that Jett Duffey is in Lubbock, because he's never going to have to worry about him. He's going to be a leader, he's going to make good decisions, he's going to make his grades, and the good deal for him honestly is that he kind of had to do all this the hard way, really had to hit the camp scene. He's had to earn it, and now he's grasping it. He doesn't want to do anything to get it taken away or jeopardize it."

Matt had a chance to speak with Bleacher Report recruiting analyst Damon Sayles yesterday as well, and here's what he sees from Duffey moving forward.

"Jett is a competitor, and at events like these, he does just that. You can't help but root for him. I think if the offensive line at Texas Tech does its job, he's going to put up big numbers when it's his turn to lead the Red Raiders' offense, primarily because of his ability to be a sponge with knowledge and his will to compete"

Tech already has their eye on many prospects for the 2017 class, and one prospect that the Red Raiders will definitely be keeping tabs on is Lubbock (Texas) Cooper quarterback Jarret Doege. Doege recently transferred from 2A Iraan and is set to be the quarterback in 5A at Lubbock-Cooper this fall. The transition is going well for the prospect, and he is ready to compete at the higher level.

“Everything is going good, I’ve made plenty of friends, and the team is looking really good too. I love the facilities out there especially the football stadium. I love coach (Max) Kattwinkel and all the guys around me, I think we can have a really good season this year,” he said. “I came here to Cooper to see if I can compete at the 5A level, so I think the better competition around me, the better I will play. I obviously have to get bigger and faster to keep up at this level, but I can throw with anyone out there, so the 5A competition doesn’t bother me. I just need to get bigger and faster.”

Many schools are in wait-and-see mode with Doege right now, as they are looking to see how he transitions to the 5A level.

“Tech told me to have a good year and they would keep in touch with me. Teams like UTSA, North Texas, Texas State have told me they will watch my film and keep up with me. Leach at Washington State has also contacted me as well. A lot of schools including Texas Tech have told me they will definitely keep an eye on my transition to the bigger classification.”

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound signal caller is excited to prove himself this upcoming season and is ready to show schools that he is worthy of a scholarship offer.

“I think I can throw the ball anywhere, anyhow, and I can throw the ball as good or better than the best high school players out there.”

Doege’s name sounds familiar to just about every Texas Tech football fan as his brother Seth played quarterback for Tech from 2008-2012. The younger Doege hopes to follow in his brother’s footsteps and eventually don the red and black somewhere down the road.

“Tech would be an awesome school to play at. It is where my brother played and I would love to play there too. I mean if they offered me, I would probably commit there on the spot,” he said. “Since my brother played there, I have a close connection with a few of the coaches. I really like what coach Kingsbury is doing with the program, I like what he is doing, I like how he coaches, and I’m really cool with him and a lot of the other coaches. Every time I see them, they always make an effort to say high to me.”

Doege and a few of his fellow Cooper teammates recently attended the high school football camp on campus just a few weeks ago, and the young QB felt like he did a good job to earn the proper recognition from the Tech coaches.

“I loved the Tech camp. I think it was one of my best camp performances, I was able to make all the necessary throws and did whatever the coaches asked of me. I felt like all my throws were accurate, I put the ball where only the receiver could get it, and I had good zip on my throws,” he said. “Kingsbury complimented my work at the camp and just told me to ball out in the Fall and see where it takes me.”

Jarret has worked very hard over the summer to improve his game and has called upon his older brother Seth to help him refine his skills and give him advice when it comes to being recruited as a D-1 athlete.

“I’ve been working with my brother a lot this summer and he has helped me greatly. I’m throwing the ball better than I ever have before. I mean I really need to work on getting faster since that is what colleges are looking for now, players who can run and throw. The size will come with it, but if you have some speed you can do it all,” he said. “He’s just been telling me to be patient, but if I do well this season then everything will soon follow and something will be there for me. He’s been telling me that if I do get an offer though I kind of need to jump on it because spots are filling up.”
