First off, as a disclaimer, I'm in Richmond, Virginia, so I cant "swing on by" or go to a reputable person you know.

But, I struggle with trusting car shops. Many of them seem to charge a lot more than I would suspect/google, and I also really struggle to believe in their competence. Cars are not my thing- but I'm wondering how you go about judging if a car repair place is full of $hit or worth their weight in gold?

I just got my body control module on my gmc terrain fixed (got it back last night- it should have been Thurs PM but "scott" appears to lack communication and planning skills. Now my tire pressure monitoring system needs to be reprogrammed. Yes, I can have them do it or I can probably follow youtube instructions-- but I always get the sense these guys dont get that I need my vehcicle daily and them "having a change of plans" is a huge inconvience to me.

BTW, if you're wondering- here the thing I needed repaired costs $154- they charged me $330, 180 for figuring out what was wrong (would seem pretty fvcking straightforward to me, given what all went out) and then $180 more for programming.

So, rant aside, how do you know the place you take your cars is worth a damn rather than a place to fleece regular joes?
