Am hearing from a Level I source (or whatever is a pretty good source) that Tanner Schafer, the Canadian QB, will be a preferred walk-on at Tech. It would be hard to find a better walk-on.
He's a legit 6-3, a little on the skinny side at about 180 pounds. Originally had an offer from Tulsa (and Sterlin Gilbert, now UT offensive coordinator), but family is not one that has to have scholarship money to go to school.
Last two years he guided Canadian to 31-0 record and consecutive 2A Division I state titles. Were not even challenged this year and beat Refugio, 61-20, in the finals. Think he might have played five times in second half.
His numbers were 292 of 377 (77 percent) for 4,053 yards, 49 TDs and 2 interceptions. Was just named CBS MaxPreps Small-School All-American team. I get they are small school and there's the competition thing, but most believe they could have won 3A and would have been very competitive playing the best in 4A.
Was in Houston for the state championship games, and he threw some balls in tight windows that you just don't see many small-school QBs make.
For what it's worth, Canadian just had an offensive lineman start for 2-3 years at Missouri, and Auston English was a starter at DE for Oklahoma about 10 years ago, so they can churn out Division I players.
There's no downside to this if it happens..
