I’ve thought a lot about the loss this weekend and had some thoughts on where the program is under Wells.
Like most, I thought we’d get blown out and loved to see the fight from our team. They seemed motivated and had good mentality despite setbacks.
The onside and punt block were awesome. Conversely the reverse is also true. Overall some good coaching but punter was too slow with obvious pressure and Zech fumbles the ball.
Loved what I saw overall from the defense. They were gassed at he end but played sound, tackled well and got some negative plays.
The newcomers are impressive. Kliff left an enormous hole at spots and Wells’ ability to get players has made this roster competitive. I think this is a huge point that he has successfully identified and acquired talent.
Recruiting is solid and I like the talent committed. I like that Wells has a standard and is very open to transfers. It has worked well for SMU.
I hated the sky kick and don’t agree with prevent but understand the rationale. We didn’t execute but ordinarily these limit risk and make the team use clock but our defense let up. Wells has shown some questionable situational football calls but some just weren’t executed. These coordinators are better than we have had historically.
Only a Sr QB could pull that comeback off and you have to tip your hat.
The interceptions were brutal. One wasn’t Bowman’s fault as I and he thought he had a free play from an offsides. Even still he made a poor decision and throw.
This leads me to the title about Bowman. I trust Wells to build a program and be competitive. We were a handful of plays away from winning more games last year and should have had a huge upset.
Bowman needs to be Jordan Love for this to click. Not exactly the same game but a difference maker. In my view, Bowman isn’t that player right now and has a few more opportunities to show that he can be. Decision making and throws are questionable.
If we drop the next game or two I think you need to start Maverick. There is enough talent here to be at least .500 and if you have to switch QBs to get there then do it. Bowman needs to show that he is the reason we win and not part of the mistakes that are part of a loss. Harrell took his lumps too so I’m not totally out on him but he needs to raise his level of play.
