Thought this was worth noting. Post season success is ultimately what people remember, but it is a series of one game tournaments. The best team often goes home early. That matters, but also pay attention to what teams show over a bunch of games vs just one.
Grant has been in charge for 2 seasons, and he has finished tied for 3rd and in 2nd in the Big 12.
Mark Adams was 3rd (with a very, very good team) and 9th in the same amount of time.
Beard finished tied for 2nd (likely 1st without a broken toe), tied for 1st, and tied for 3rd. The high-water mark, but also 2 very low performing seasons. Also, the 3rd place year was 9-9...what the heck happened that year?
Tubby finished 7th as his highest. Bob Knight was tied for 3rd his best year. Dickey as well (Big 12-wise).
I get that where you place has a lot to do with other teams and how they do. It isn't a perfect metric. But it is an interesting one because other than the round robin years, schedules were uneven, injuries come into play, and all kinds of other factors.
It is worth noting that Grant is probably off to the best regular season start for any coach in Tech history. A strong run in the tourney probably cements him as having the best two seasons of any coach in Tech history.
