Went to the game
Just some thoughts
- Atmosphere was tremendous. So few places like the USA when it’s rockin. Loud, rowdy, clearly got to Iowa State at times during the game
- You came out ready, which is something we have harped on with this team. But today that was not an issue. They were jacked up, the crowd was jacked up. Hit them in the mouth from the jump.
- But you knew Iowa State would make a run, they’re too good of a team and they did. And you took their punches and you kept finding yourself a lead. Iowa State couldn’t quite get over the hill. You kept throwing punches right back.
- Christian Anderson take a bow. This kid is going to be so good. Your big 3, Williams-Toppin-Darrion… excellent game.
- Main thoughts are this though.
Yes you could say a lot about the refs. Yet again this season it was a times another ref show.
Yes some of the coaching decisions clearly didn’t work.
Yes you missed free throws in massively key moments and you missed some big chances at the end of both regulation and OT defensively and offensively.
Simply you really probably should have closed this out and you choked in some ways.
BUT, this was also the #3 team in the country and IMO either them or Auburn are the best team in the country period. This Cyclone team is loaded, old, smart, well coached, incredible defensively and offensively. It took every bit of that 26 from Jones to get out of Lubbock with a dub.
And you went toe to toe, wire to wire plus 5 and you absolutely looked like you belonged. You looked really really good.
You have work to do, no doubt.
But as bummed as I was leaving that arena (still bummed now) you proved yourself today. No you didnt close it out and you should have. But you came ready and you threw haymakers. You had a true freshman show out and your big 3 is for real.
I HATE that we lost this one. Heartbroken walking out. Guttural pain. But you have 16 games left and it feels like you are turning a corner. If you can have this Iowa State team on the ropes, then you can play with anyone.
No idea what happens going forward, but today showed me how good this team is capable of being. You can beat anyone in the country. 16 games to prove it and get back in the elites conversation.
No moral victories, you lost and you shouldn’t have. But I hope this wakes this team the fvck up. Because they showed they can be a force today.
