Opening weekend has passed. 36 innings of baseball.
The good
- Gabe Holt will be an all big 12 caliber freshman. Never looked overwhelmed. Looked great at the plate and will be fantastic at the top of this lineup. His speed on the base paths will be huge. Brings a different look to TTU than we have had the past few years.
- Aggressiveness on the base paths all weekend. I like it. It puts so much pressure on opposing pitchers. Keep running. Keep pressing. Keep forcing the issue.
- Cameron Warren will provide a ton of pop for this team. He battled for the 1B spot and I think his patience at the plate this weekend was very impressive.
- Josh Jung will be the Big 12 player of the year. Power to all fields. Hit off speed stuff. Hit fastballs. This kid will be legend by the time he leaves campus. 10 RBI's on opening weekend? Done.
- The OF combo of Little, Farhat, and Beck is damn good. Beck had some terrible luck at the plate against Maine but I think Tadlock playing him all weekend shows how much he believes in him.
- Really impressed with Koelzer and Fulford at catcher. Both handled some shaky pitchers and showed great instincts behind the dish.
- Pounded the Maine staff for 49 runs this weekend. Up and down the lineup, you're gonna be able to hit.
- Spoiler alert, gingery leaving with elbow discomfort will come up during the ugly, but Dusek coming in for Gingery was huge. He looked great, threw a lot of strikes and forced contact.
- Kilian, Quezada, Freeman, Kurt Wilson. All four showed dominant stuff. Not stuff that can get outs against lesser competition, but dominant stuff.
- Dane Haveman will take the place of Mushinski. Elbows and knees coming towards the plate. Very jerky motion but I think it hides the pitches well.
- Good to see Harpeneau throw well this weekend. Pound the zone with a lead and let your defense go to work.
The bad
- Walks. Walks. Walks. 22 of them this weekend. With the offensive firepower that this team has, you have to be able to go out and throw strikes. McMillon. Lanning. Shetter. Quit walking people!
- Mental mistakes. Koelzer leaving early during an easy sac fly. Jung running a player all the way back to second and missing an easy out. All this stuff is easily correctable, just some dumb opening day jitters.
The ugly
- Everyone hope and pray that Gingery's elbow is ok. This kid is a bonafide ace. But I will say this, if there is a team that can absorb him going down for a few weeks, it's this roster.
