The season is just a little halfway over and you sit at 25-6, not bad at all. I want to remind everyone just what path this program was on before Tadlock took over. Listed is the year and the finish we had:
2005 - 8
2006 - 8
2007 - 10
2008 - 9
2009 - 7
2010 - 5
2011 - 7
2012 - 8
2013 - 8 (Tadlock's first year)
2014 - 4
2015 - 3
2016 - 1
Damn near a perennial bottom feeder for almost a decade. Tech has played a lot of road games so far this year. In fact, the first 3 of 4 conference series will be on the road. We've beaten SEC, PAC 12 and swept a conference opponent so far this year. OU was clearly a disappointing weekend, but we also didn't have our Friday night ace, hottest hitter in Gardner all weekend, and Long sat out Friday as well.
This team is an odd mix of experience and youth, with each picking up each other most of the year. Garcia and Davis both had good days today, and appear to be breaking out of their slumps. Hargrove, Long and Rheams all had a day to forget. As a team, we strike out way too much. This team needs to be more selective and put more balls in play.
I'd like to see McMillon take back over at DH and only see Rheams in for a pinch hit situation. They are basically the same hitter, with McMillon having a much bigger upside, imo.
Farhat has been on fire and 0 drop off from Gardner since taking over. I'd leave him in center until he hits a rough stretch, as he's a much better fielder than Gardner.
The bullpen still has some issues, but has been better than expected. There are some inconsistencies, and that will likely continue the rest of the year. Patterson and Mushinski are what they are. Absolute nails one day, and couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat the next (more so for Mushinski than Patterson).
Can we all take a moment to be thankful for what Martin and Gingery have done in 1.5 years at Tech, and appreciate how hard it is to do as freshmen, and then have no drop off/get even better the next year? JHG has promise, but isn't in the same stratosphere as either of those two. I'd like to see JHG be the Sunday guy going forward and have Shetter in the pen. Shetter settled down really well today after the first, but he just doesn't appear to be suited as a starter. I think 3-4 IP on the weekends as a reliever would be a much better role for him.
We may not win the league, but we are absolutely a top 10 team in the country. We will make the tourney and, at minimum, host a regional. We may not be a national seed, but we will make the committee think long and hard about us. I know some might be disappointed, and that's okay. We have finally become spoiled with a sport and have high expectations. You can't win them all in baseball, just a matter of fact and luck. Try to enjoy another stellar baseball year, with many more to come.
Guns up!
