I watched the game yesterday. Tevin Madison was abused, letting RBs outside all day. Most of the runs in the first half and third quarter were bounced outside but we couldn't do anything about it at that point. Gibbs has been pretty good at not letting teams get outside at his past stops. I just didn't see guys running to the ball, too many solo tackles and I don't think we have a LB/DB on our roster that can bring those guys down one-on-one. Our secondary was out of position all day. That will probably be the biggest improvement from last year on defense. I think we will have a better chance keeping everything inside with this scheme and Bethel on the boundary. Hopefully Hendrix gets the FS spot; we could use his size against Arky. Drop Pete in the flats more.
I'll admit that I was not a fan of Grant's role in last years offense and I hope Shorts takes a lot of reps from him. He just had no chance against those DBs. We threw two slants to him on 2nd & 3rd down and I just feel a bigger guy could have grabbed those. He dropped a lot last year though. I was tired of watching his blocks get blown up too.
I'm pretty sure the Grant fumble and the Webb pick were Arky's first 14 points. I think Webb could have had 5 picks in the first half but they dropped some. I'll go as far to say Webb played terrible all game. Even when we were moving the ball and matching points, it was swing pass, screen, sweeps and off tackle runs and slants. Lots of guys can do that. But once he had to look down field, he was hitting LBs and missing throws. Same in the WV game. We actually got Arky to start bringing a safety down but couldn't take advantage of it.
You're going to have a hard time convincing me this isn't the best backfield we have had in the spread. I don't know what Washington runs but he gets there quick and he is hard to bring down. Stockton seems to get up just as fast but has that pull away speed that Washington doesn't. White is pretty fun to watch too.
Our size hurts us on ST. It doesn't matter how fast Batson, Stockton and Grant are if we can't hold blocks.
