SAN ANGELO, Texas - Christian Taylor, who was about to begin his sophomore season with the Angelo State University football team, was shot and killed by a police officer early Friday in Arlington.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress about 1 a.m. at the Classic Buick GMC dealership on the Interstate 20 service road, east of Collins Street, said Sgt. Paul Rodriguez, a police spokesman.

A security company had called 911 after observing the suspect on camera outside the business.

Rodriguez said police arrived to find that the suspect had used a vehicle to crash into the showroom through the dealership’s front glass.

“The officers went and confronted him. There was an altercation. An officer discharged his weapon and struck the suspect,” Rodriguez said.

The suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not armed with a weapon, Rodriguez said.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him Friday afternoon as 19-year-old Christian Taylor.

The officer, identified by the department as 49-year-old Brad Miller, graduated from the police academy in March. He has been in field training and working under the supervision of a police training officer, the department said.

Taylor, who attended Mansfield Summit High School, was one of the stars of Angelo State’s spring game in February with two interceptions.

Becky Brackin, director of Communications and Marketing for ASU, said the university was saddened to hear of Taylor’s death.

“We’re not familiar with any of the details because it happened away from here,” Brackin said. “But we’d just like people to know that we are sad and sorry for his family and friends.”

ASU head coach Will Wagner wasn’t made available for comment but posted a Tweet that said, “Heart is hurting.”
