one thing I have learned is that you really do never know for sure what is going to happen in any given game. This was a game I could not imagine Tech winning in any conceivable way heading into it.
Once the game started it seemed just as unlikely. This team has gotten a few unlucky bounces this year in close games. Here in this one it seemed like they would have to start every offensive possession from their own 2 yard line. Hardly what you want for a guy trying to start his first game on national TV against UT.
Over and over UT had chances to extend their lead to a point where no comeback was possible. Somehow that didn't happen. Somehow an almost storybook ending happened instead with a guy who has taken a beating all year long from many of his own fans leads one of the most improbable comebacks in Tech history.
Let's put aside whether this one game should determine who the HC should be. Tonight that is not the proper topic to focus on.
This has been a team that despite a lot of shortcomings and a several really tough losses in games that might have won with just a normal FG kicker, has never quite once this season. Regardless of
the overall W-L record, we never saw one of those games where they shut down and gave up.
When the season started, my feeling about this team was that maybe it could win 2-3 more games with less talent at QB by improving some on defense and then managing the game better on offense with a QB who valued the ball and took more time off the clock.
Now that the season is over, I still think that was a decent analysis. This team almost did win a couple of extra games trying to use the formula. The defense absolutely did enough on that side for that to work. Where we fell short was on offense. We just do not have enough consistent playmakers to help out a less mobile QB that defenses could sit back on once they saw the blue print on what to do. We were never able to adjust to that enough to win the close games. Our QB desparately needed several WR's who could consistently get separation to help him out and we just did not have that this year in many games.
All that aside, I will never question the heart of this years team. Somehow they did manage to win 6 games despite all kinds of obstacles out of their control and with a significant portion of their own fan base turned against them and actually hoping they would lose. I understand why some fans feel that way, but I will never hope Tech loses ever.
It takes a lot of character to handle all that and keep trying hard no matter what. I believe this team did do that regardless of anything else.
I am glad they are bowl eligible and hope they get to enjoy it. No matter what the future holds for this program, I will always remember this team fondly for never giving up no matter what. I have seen plenty of teams fail in that regard when challenged like this team was this year. Congratulations to the seniors on this team that will get to go to a bowl. Enjoy!!
