Apologies for length but, I need some advice from my Red Raider brethren.
I was recently offered an opportunity to set up / run a Quality Control Lab for a startup Biotech Company in Portland. I love the area but there was an uneasy feeling as soon as I visited the facilities this week that I just can't shake. The company has a good vision but I can't seem to convince myself that they have the necessary resources to reach their desired goal on the short timeline that they have.
I have worked for the same company in Austin for 10 years and the opportunities for advancement are minimal, my wife (already complied with rule #1) recently lost her job and my daughter will start Kindergarten in the fall. Now seems like the most opportune time to consider a move of this magnitude.
Here's problem #2... I was expecting to be considered for the role of Quality Control Manager, they have offered the title of Quality Control Supervisor with no direct reports and a lower salary. It feels like they slapped a shiny new title on a position that I should consider lateral. I do plan on holding out for Management but this concerns me as they do not currently have a Manager for Quality Control and I have never met the person that I would directly report to (not even so much as a phone conversation).
This move has the potential to launch my career in Biotech into the stratosphere if it works but I have serious concerns about the sustainability of the company. Portland isn't exactly a hot spot for Biotech while Austin is booming right now so I am concerned about where we would end up if this place doesn't succeed.
I realize that you have to take risks to get ahead in life but I can't decide if the risk is too much in this case. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks to everyone who has the patience to read this!
