Jalene Hinkle, ex-Texas Tech women's soccer player, is one of the best women soccer players in the US. She was raised a devout Christian and during her junior year at Tech experienced an 80% artery blockage in a knee, that her surgeon thought would end her career because he thought he was going to have to insert a stent and then advise against any type of contact sport. The night before her surgery, her mother said they must pray all night long for God to heal her. The next day, the surgeon said he did not necessarily believe in God, but the artery had opened overnight. Thus, combined with her upbringing, she has devoted herself to God.
Skip ahead a few years, and she is now one of the best women soccer players in the US. The US soccer team was going to wear LGBTQ rainbow numbers to support gay pride last year and she refused to play on religious grounds. Despite what some consider her great play, she has been sent to the minors this year and now it has evolved into a Christian Right vs LGBTQ community fight.
