Back in the day there was a young man, raised by a lovely single mom on the outskirts of Dallas, who received a scholarship to Texas Tech.
For his first few years he was buried in depth behind a legendary Raider RB James Gray. In his senior year, many of the OLs had graduated but it was his turn to start as the primary RB. Trouble is he had a left knee that wasn't too happy and required serious taping just to get onto the field most games. I was lucky enough to asked to be an honorary coach by Spike for the Miami game back in 1989 and couldn't believe all of the tape he needed on his leg when I saw him in the pre game.
This young man never said a word. All he did was bust his tail and do the best that he could. He was a great team leader setting by example and effort. He and his wife had a young son and somehow they survived in what was the Tech "Ghetto", now the rebuilt Overton area. We used to hang out and they would come over to the house and babysit my girls every now and again. They were such great young folks.
He was not drafted but, given his athleticism and great attitude, was picked up as a free agent. Before long he became the special teams captain for the Denver Broncos. He worked and worked and survived for many years. As his career approached its end, he looked into the chance to get into coaching, first as a position coach and then eventually as a coordinator.
It got better. He interviewed for a couple of head coaching positions and guess what......
This evening that young man who elevated himself out of the outskirts of Dallas, returned as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers and had his team put a serious whipping on those Cowboys.
Can you even imagine what a young man would think about the chance to grow up and aspire to achieve such a thing on Thanksgiving in his old neighborhood?
Anthony Lynn is one amazing graduate of Texas Tech. He never had the easy route. He always had to fight the good fight to make the next step. He is one of the greatest, legendary achievers in modern day Tech athletics.
Tonight I celebrate all that Anthony Lynn is doing and what he represents. The Los Angeles Chargers made an excellent decision and I am so pleased for Anthony!
Fantastic!
