We're now two weeks into fall camp, so I wanted to share some insight based on what I've gathered about how things have gone so far...
-There's starting to be a feeling that this O-line may end up being better than many of us, myself included, anticipated it would be. Sounds to me like there's some real confidence in the job Brandon Jones is doing coaching that group. I'm not saying they're going to be world beaters, but I think there's starting to be a good sense that they're going to be quite a bit better as a unit than they were a year ago.
-That being said, I think Madison Akamnonu has had a bit of a disappointing fall camp. He's mostly running with the second string at left guard while Jacob Hines runs with the first string. He needs to pick it up to win a starting job at this point.
-Vaughnte Dorsey appears to be very close to locking down the right safety position and beating out Kisean Allen and Trevor Walker for that job. He's still learning the system a bit, but he's extremely aggressive and physical, which you need more of.
-If you had to pick the next man up after your starting four receivers - Coutee, Cantrell, Batson, Willies - I think the consensus pick for your 5th WR would be Quan Shorts. Think he's had a really really good fall camp at X behind Willies. Don't think he'll start over Willies, but I think he certainly is turning heads and is a bright spot for you at WR for the future.
-Desmond Nisby continues to turn heads at tailback, and I think generally everyone has been fairly pleased with the progress of the running back corps as a whole so far in camp.
-While he's not running with the first team, it sounds like Tony Jones has done some good things at rush end. Yes, he's undersized, but he's quick off the edge.
-This DB group appears to be progressing at the rate that Gibbs/Scott want them to be, and the competition level in the secondary is higher than it's ever been since they've been here. Probably a "duh" statement, but good to hear that it is the case.
-There appears to be a pretty universal feeling that this defense is currently on track to be the best one since Coach Kingsbury has been here. That being said, there are still nearly three weeks until you play anyone, so that feeling could change, but so far I think everyone is very pleased with the progress of the D as a whole so far in camp.
