A little background: About two years ago I was fired from my sales rep position. My boss, we'll call him Steven, never liked me even though I was by far his top producer. He was a spreadsheet kind of guy and I just wanted to sell. I understand the importance of good reports but the things he would ask us to do would keep us at the computer and not selling for hours and hours each week (I'm talking like 10 a week). My reports may have been less detailed than others but I killed my quota every quarter for two years straight. When he called me into his bosses office, we'll call her Julie, to talk about my reports she kind of laughed and told him to worry about the other 60% of his team who hasn't made quota in over a year (Julie loved me). A few months after that Julie took another position at another company and I was fired the next day. He did this with a grin that I will never forget and had me escorted out in front of all of my peers even though I was completely calm and not even argumentative (I took it like a man). However, I can't remember ever being that upset on the inside.
Fast forward to the present: I found another job relatively quickly with a competitor and have since been promoted to VP of southwest sales. We just bought my previous company and I found out yesterday that I have been promoted to president of supplemental sales for both my current and previous companies. Steven is still holding his same position and will be reporting directly to me. I am about to head to the Dallas office to introduce myself as the new boss and he has no idea its me.
My question is, how should I handle this? The CEO of our company thinks this is hilarious and told me to feel free to let him go if I feel that it would be a distraction. Did I mention that Steven is an Aggie?
My face hurts from the ear to ear smile I've had since yesterday.
