With Big 12 play for the Red Raiders coming, I wanted to take a broad, quick look around the conference, but first a brief look at the Red Raiders opponent for a mid-week, starting tonight at 6:30 then concluding Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Texas Tech hosts UT-Arlington for two this week with the Mustangs sitting at No. 85 in the RPI as things stand but obviously that figure doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. UTA rolls in with a 7-8 record on the year with an impressive home-and-home split with TCU but some really bad losses is there.

Bats to Watch: Tyson Pointer (.339 AVG, 1.008 OPS, 10 2B, 2 HR), Ryan Black (.364 AVG, .980 OPS, 2 HR)

Now, to a brief look at every Big 12 team with conference play starting this weekend.

Oklahoma State (14-3):

No rest for the wicked with the Red Raiders opening with the Cowboys this weekend, widely looked at as the two best teams in the conference at the moment. Probably one of the more important series of the year to open Big 12 play.

A rotation spearheaded by former Tech commit Juaron Watts-Brown and a lineup headlined by Roc Riggio, this team is really good and it will be a really exciting weekend at Dan Law Field. I’ll have a more in-depth look at them later in the week.

West Virginia (10-4):

The Mountaineers have been quite solid to start the season, something that I had somewhat expected. They’re pretty talented but haven’t played a ton of quality competition this season, currently at No. 59 in RPI.

JJ Wetherholt and Caleb McNeely both carry OPS marks over 1.000 so far, headlining that lineup. On the pitching side, MLB Draft target Blaine Trexel has impressed so far with a sub-2.50 ERA.

Kansas State (11-5):

K-State’s record is a bit inflated so far, haven’t really played anyone. Their two best games have been losses against No. 1 LSU and that very Iowa team we saw over the weekend. Middle of the road Big 12 team, just not the fourth best team in the conference.

Oklahoma (11-5):

The Sooners currently sit at No. 58 in the RPI, one slot ahead of WVU, having not played much power five competition. A win over Ohio State and a sweep over Houston is the highlight so far. Three hitters with OPS marks over 1.000,

Side note: Tech transfer Jamie Hitt has a 5.19 ERA so far this season.

TCU (9-6):

The Frogs are underperforming and had a tough weekend against San Diego, but are still damn talented and their RPI and poll rankings reflect that.

Future first rounder Brayden Taylor is hitting well and TCU carries a two-headed monster in the rotation in Kole Klechler (1.86 ERA, 0.78 WHIP) and Cam Brown (2.37 ERA, 1.26 WHIP).

Texas (9-7):

The Horns are much worse than last year, almost a completely new roster (they could use Gavin Kash right about now), but they’re still likely to be in the top half of the conference. Don’t completely sleep on them, they’re still UT.

Kansas (7-6):

This team lost its best player to the portal last season, and is still quite a ways off, but aren’t as bad as Baylor is. Tech should sweep these guys.

Remember Sam Hunt, the outfielder who assisted an ACU home run in CF last year? He’s their everyday first baseman.

Baylor (5-11):

The Bears are bad, really bad. Not much else to be said.
