The 1970 Lubbock tornado hit 50 years ago today on the evening of May 11, 1970. In its aftermath were 31 dead, more than 500 injured, and millions in damages. The damn thing didn't really come into the city, but formed almost downtown and proceeded to wreak havoc in downtown, along Ave. Q and into the northern parts.

It barely missed the Tech campus, and did some structural damage to Jones Stadium. Some were in their vehicles and sucked out. Some died trying to get to cellars. A family of 4-5 near the country club took a direct shot and were killed.

I was 11 years old and living in the Panhandle. I remember it well.
