tl;dr
I've always thought 1st Quarter/1st drive kind of told you how well the coaches scripted plays and how prepared they were for kickoff. While 3rd quarter really told you how well coaches adjust on the fly. You've got 20 minutes to analyze what's happened and get things corrected. In my humble opinion, the 3rd quarter separates out the pretenders from the real coaches. Obviously, everyone cares about the final score and it ultimately determines everything but there are a million different reasons for the final score. The 3rd quarter, more than any other, comes down to how well you can coach/adjust and if we're just looking at coaching quality, let's look at the 3rd quarter.
