2nd Down and 19 – Dakota Allen sack. Would have been 3rd and 30. PENALTY - Holding on Tony Jones (legit call). Instead of 1st and 10, they marked off the 10 yards and called it 2nd and 9. I thought all defensive holding calls were automatic 1st downs???
2nd and 9 – PENALTY - Pass interference on Johnson. Bad call. Johnson had his head turned. The WR jumped into Johnson because the pass was about 3 yards inside of where it should have been thrown. If anything, it could have been offensive PI, but likely just should have been a no call.
1st and 10 – Ballage run to the left. Mych Thomas and Dakota had their hands on him, but couldn’t tackle him. Ballage goes down the sideline for about 15.
1st and 10 – Pressure from Coleman, Wilkins escapes to the right and runs for 15. Good play by Wilkins.
1st and 10 – Play action pass. Tech bit hard on the run fake. WR who came across the formation was WIDE OPEN, but Wilkins threw a poor pass for an incompletion. WR likely scores a long TD with a decent pass.
2nd and 10 – Hand off to Richards for a 3 yard gain. Nick McCann and Mych Thomas. Solid
3rd and 7 – Back shoulder fade to Harry, but broken up (or interfered with) by DJPB. Incomplete. Stood over Harry and was called for a soft taunting foul. KILLER PENALTY. Would have been 4th and 7 and either a punt or a 48 yard FG attempt. You can't give the refs a reason to throw a flag. Legit call or not, it was 100% avoidable.
1st and 10 – Pitch to motion man. Defended very well. 6 Tech defenders strung the play to the sideline for a 2 yard gain. PENALTY – Johnson hit the player in bounds, but finished the tackle hard out of bounds. 50/50 on whether it should have been called, but if the roles were reversed, Tech fans would be screaming for a flag. A little too aggressive by Johnson.
1st and Goal from the 6 – QB keeper up the middle for a gain of 3. Solid defense.
2nd and Goal from the 3 – Fade pass to the corner. Jaylon Lane with good/very good coverage. Great throw and catch by the WR. Not bad defense at all. Great offensive play & execution.
All in all, Tech played excellent defense on the drive. Everyone knows penalties killed them and the DJPB call was probably the one that hurt the most, but the Tony Jones Holding call was also bad. He was overly aggressive in coming up, and didn’t do a good job of recognizing his coverage responsibility quickly enough. We all know how important this drive was to the outcome of the game, but I thought it would be interesting to diagnose the series from start to finish.
