I had planned on waiting things out and seeing what players are added between now and next February, but after yesterday's article on TTU Recruiting, there seemed to be some confusion around the 2021 class and how the overall rankings were being updated.
As I have mentioned in other conversations, Rivals does not have intentions to create a transfer portal rankings system, so we can use each prospect's ranking out of high school or junior college...that means if a prospect was never ranked, then said player would not 'improve' the numbers in this rankings update.
I understand there is a conversation to be had around a player's perceived 'value' or ranking out of high school compared to present day, but these are the rankings we have to use.
This post is not intended to make the 2021 class 'look better' by any means, but simply a response to several requests for the @staff to track these additions given the recruiting strategy being employed by the coaching staff - re: adding transfers
Here is a link to the Rivals Recruiting Rankings Formula
essentially, every prospect has a star ranking and that star ranking is associated with ___ amount of points...
6.1 (five star) = 150 points
6.0 (four star) = 135 points
5.9 (four star) = 120 points
5.8 (four star) = 105 points
5.7 (three star) = 90 points
5.6 (three-star) = 75 points
5.5 (three-star) = 60 points
5.4 (two-star) = 45 points
5.3 (two-star) = 30 points
5.2 (two-star) = 15 points
The 2021 recruiting class currently lists 11 commitments and 780 points, and is ranked as the No. 90 overall class in the nation - Rivals Team Rankings
We do not expect junior college DT DeMeco Roland to sign with the Red Raiders, so taking away his commitment and the points (5.5 three-star = 60 points), the class sits at 10 commitments and 720 points - tied for the No. 98 overall class in the nation
As we reviewed in yesterday's TTU Recruiting article, there are six (6) prospects the coaching staff is counting towards this 2021 class as well...
Colin Schooler - 5.7 three-star out of high school = 90 points
Tyree Wilson - 5.7 three-star out of high school = 90 points
Cameron White - 5.6 three-star out of JUCO = 75 points
Cameron Watts - unranked out of JUCO = 0 points
John Holcomb - 5.5 three-star out of high school = 60 points
Jason Lloyd - 5.6 three-star out of JUCO = 75 points
...so overall, adding in these prospects gives the program 16 total commitments for the 2021 class, and the class gains a total of 390 points
let's take the 720 points from the 10 signees, plus the 390 points from these six (6) prospects carried over into the 2021 class = 1,110 points, which ties UCF for the No. 60 overall class in the nation
in the past few days, the coaching staff has added verbal commitments from two (2) graduate transfer defensive backs that will also count towards the 2021 recruiting class...
Malik Dunap - 5.5 three-star out of high school = 60 points
Marquis Waters - 5.5 three-star out of high school = 60 points
...these commitments give the program 18 total commitments for the 2021 class, and the class gains 120 points for a new total of 1,230 points, which is currently good for the No. 47 overall class in the nation
the coaching staff has the ability to sign up to 25 total prospects, meaning they would have roughly seven (7) spots remaining in the 2021 class
the Rivals Rankings Formula takes the program's Top 20 rated commitments, so even adding two (2) more commitments to the class would provide a more accurate 'final' ranking
so TLDR, if you made it this far and have questions, please @me or @B. Golan and we will answer all of your questions
