Joey has certainly resurrected the Jones being a tough place to play. Only 3 losses total in Lubbock at almost the half way point of year 3.
14-3 is stellar.
But, as he’s said as much himself, to really get over the hump in turning this program around, they’re gonna have to learn how to win in unfriendly environments. It’s been the exact opposite on the road. 3-9…
They’ve made it a point of emphasis this offseason and in fall camp
From Joey in July:
“If you’re going to win games on the road, you’ve got to be a tough football team,” said McGuire during Tuesday’s Big 12 Media Days session at Alegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. “If you’re going to win games in November and December, you’ve got to be a tough football team. We’re growing. We’re trending in that direction, but we have not been tough enough to win games on the road. That’s been one of our biggest Achilles' heels. But if we’re going to be in the mix and if we’re going to be talked about at the end of the year and playing in the Big 12 championship, we’ve got to go to Iowa State, we’ve got to go to TCU and we’ve got to Oklahoma State and we’ve got to find a way to win games on the road.”
If this program is ever gonna be a contender, then it’s gotta get dubs on the road. Pretty simple.
Guess what? We are headed to Tucson this week to play a Wildcat team that just got a massive road dub vs Utah. 😬 Late AF kick too vs what may be a ranked opponent by next week.
I’ll say this though, only 3 of those road losses were real beatings. In fact, you only got beat by 13 or less in 7 of those 12 road games. You’ve often been right there in the game as the visiting squad, but can’t quite seem to close the gap.
But again if you wanna be a contender, gotta start turning that 3-9 record around somewhere… headed to AZ this week.
