Yes, about that draining the swamp

I know it's hard to keep up with all of those charged and indicted in Trump's orbit, but the latest is Steve Bannon, former White House chief political strategist, indicted Thursday on money laundering after he's alleged to have pocketed more than $1 million from taking advantage of the gullible in the "Build the Wall" fundraising scheme. It couldn't happen to a nicer asshole. Of course, Trump feeds off the gullible and naïve as he's done all his life. The latest is the millions he's raised (more accurately, stolen) for his "election fraud" fund.

This is on the heels of the longtime Trump Organization CFO pleading guilty last month to 15 counts ranging form grand larceny to tax fraud.

Others who have been indicted or would have been without a Trump pardon including his personal attorney Michael Cohen, former campaign chair Paul Manafort, resident loon Roger Stone, and NSA advisor Michael Flynn,

But only the best people and draining that swamp.

Turnover margin

Through 3 games so far Tech is -5 in turnover margin.

We've committed 8 turnovers through 3 games of play, while forcing only 3 turnovers in that same time period.

Donovan Smith-- 5 picks
Behren Morton-- 2 picks
Drew Hocutt-- 1 fumble

Reggie Pearson-- 1 pick
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson- 2 fumble recoveries (Giving him credit for the NC State fumble since he forced it and it went out of the endzone)

SIAP: Messages for Bryce Ramirez

Saw this floating around on twitter and thought I’d post here in case it hadn’t already been posted. If you feel lead to, please share a positive message for Bryce in his recovery. Plenty of Red Raiders, NC State fans and other big 12 fans have already sent him some words of encouragement.

Week 3 Big 12 Power Rankings

Some minor shakeups this final week of non-con for most of the Big 12 with Kstate losing in embarrassing fashion and Kansas proving they are the real deal.

  1. Oklahoma (3-0 0-0, Last Week 1)- Dominated lowly Nebraska. All sides of the ball played well but they should have against a team that fired the coach this early in the season. Will play Kansas State next week who has had their number in the past.
  2. Oklahoma State (3-0 0-0, LW 3)- Beat Arkansas Pine Bluff 63-7 as expected. The only interesting thing about this game to me was Mike Gundy’s son passing for 2 TDS. They are off this week
  3. Iowa State (3-0 0-0, LW 4)- Destroyed Ohio University which doesn’t say much. Seem like a complete team but we have to wait and see how they do against Baylor next week in Ames.
  4. Baylor (2-1 0-0, LW 6)- Beat up in Texas State isn’t saying much but they looked good and shook off the rust from losing to BYU the week before who took an ugly loss to Oregon this week. They will try and jump Iowa State in the rankings this week.
  5. Texas (2-1 0-0, LW 7)- After a shaky start the longhorns turned on the jets and ended up comfortably beating the roadrunners who are a very solid team. Game plan of give it to Bijan is an effective strategy netting them 183 yards and 3TDS. Travel to Lubbock this week.
  6. Kansas (3-0 1-0, LW 9)- Manhandled the Coogs in Houston. The result seems to confirm that the Jayhawks are a legit team this year. Jalon Daniels may be the best QB in the conference and so far it doesn’t seem very close. Duke travels to Lawrence this week.
  7. Texas Tech (2-1 0-0, LW 5)- Game felt worse than the final score indicated. Offense and Special Teams had essentially no positive takeaways but at least the Defense looks like it could be one of the strongest in the Big 12. Multiple injuries plagued the Red Raiders, QB play/scheme was questionable, and Kenny Perry’s ST unit needs a come to Jesus moment. A lot of the harsh feelings from the fans would be gone if Tech beats UT in Lubbock.
  8. Kansas State (2-1 0-0, LW 2)- I had them ranked way too high last week, clearly. Losing at home to Tulane is pitiful and a bad look for the conference. They still can pull the Typical KState and win the Big 12 but hard to see how with horrible QB play and play calling that doesn’t use their all American RB more. Sooners up next.
  9. TCU (2-0 0-0, LW 8)- No game. Burn their bye week early this year. Don’t get to jump anyone while on Bye. Good storyline vs SMU next week.
  10. West Virginia (1-2 0-1, LW 10)- Took their pain out on a garbage Towson Tigers. Desperately needed their first win after a slow start but their loss to Kansas is looking less embarrassing. Have historic rival Virginia Tech on Thursday.
Player of the week: Kansas QB Jalon Daniels (again)- 5 touchdowns accounted for by Jalon in the Jayhawks win at Houston.

Team of the week: Kansas (again), once again the most impressive win of the conference as most teams played cupcakes or lost.

UPDATE: My thoughts: Offense is the main problem heading into Big 12 play

- I’ll start here: Keith Patterson built up a strong defense and Tim DeRuyter is putting in the work to make it even better and that side of the ball is working.

- What’s not working is this offense. I’ve seen people call out the play calling and I’ll have to agree there for the most part. It doesn’t seem as though Kittley has a true game plan for Donovan and probably not even Behren. The plan was for Tyler Shough to run the show and obviously things have changed but the offense doesn’t seem to have adapted to that.

- Next week feels like it’s going to be a rough one with how strong Texas’ defense is. I already see them dominating the Red Raider offense. Meanwhile, I see the Tech defense making plays as it has but they’ll need the Tech offense to do it’s part and score often. We didn’t see that against NC State especially early when the Wolfpack was up 6-0 after red zone trips. Defense was stepping up but the offensive execution needs to be there.

- With all of those factors I don’t see a change occurring at QB. I think Smith is still the starting QB but possibly with a short leash. They can’t let a repeat happen from last year’s trip in Austin especially at home. They’ll need to try to fix the problems early if they begin to snowball. The inexperience of Donovan is still an issue but at the end of the day he has more of it than Behren, which is why I don’t see a change happening.

- Injuries are so unpredictable but have proven to hurt the Red Raiders once again. A big one is Weston Wright. You need a veteran presence on offense right now and that a huge hit in that front five.

- It’s also worth nothing that this team was pretty much all inherited from the last staff. Even with that said, they’re 2-1 after two tough non-conference games to head into Big 12 play. It doesn’t get easier from here. That makes me nervous but also excited to see where this team will finish.

Donovan Smith’s QBR (not good)

In trying to makes sense of what I have been watching the last couple of weeks, I decided to check out Donovan Smith’s stats. His inconsistency and inability to process information and/or hit open receivers seemed pretty bad.. While I know the QBR as a rating tool doesn’t contemplate certain factors and can’t factor opponent or leadership qualities, it’ is about the only way to quantify QB overall performance. What I found, shocked me..

Each of the last two weeks, Smith has had easily the worst QBR in the Big 12. It frankly isn’t close.

Against Houston, Smith’s QBR was 24.6.. Against NC State it was 22.9..

For comparison, Jaylon Daniels scored a 98.5 against Houston’s world beating defense and UTSA’s Frank Harris carded a 74.0.

Holton Ahlers of East Carolina clocked in with a 78.9 against the vaunted NC State defense.

Contemplating in a very good performance against Murray St., Donovan’s total QBR for the season is 30.5.

Adrian Martinez got off to a rough start in week 1.. He has the overall 2nd worst QBR among Big 12 starters at 38.0, but Martinez has almost doubled Smith the last two weeks.

Hudson Card has the 3rd worst total QBR among Big 12 starting QBs.. Checking in at 62.3.

I’m not sure exactly what to make of it, but it should be clear to all of us, as to why Shough was named the starter coming out of camp. I’m not sure if it will improve our QB play, but I would love to see more of Morton. Maybe he won’t fair much better, but could he honestly be worse?

STORY: Things I Liked & Disliked Against NC State

As I did last week, I’m going to share some thoughts on some things I liked and didn’t like based on last night's game against NC State. Hoping to get a clearer picture of where things are tomorrow as we enter Texas game week.

Liked

Defense:

Man, the defense kept the Red Raiders in this one. As @409to806Nback likes to say now, Tech has a respectable power five defense. That respectable defense held NC State to 20 offensive points, and it easily could’ve been less if some luck went their way.

Tech’s defense held Devin Leary, the likely ACC Player of the Year, to 121 passing yards on 15 completions. If you told me that before the game, my next question would be “Is Gameday coming to Lubbock next Saturday for a ranked matchup against Texas?”

The defense was great last night and despite some bad moments against the run, they were the only reason this game was even remotely close.

Malik Dunlap:

Dunlap is one I want to highlight from last night.

In his return to Raleigh to face his previous school, he was the best player in the secondary and had four critical pass break ups, one being in the end zone. Just an all-around great performance from him last night.

If his play can continue to elevate, the Tech secondary can get even better than it is now, which would be astonishing.

Tyrique Matthews:

Matthews is another one I want to speak about after his great performance in relief of the horrifically injured Bryce Ramirez.

After the injury, Matthews came in for his first extended look of the season and made the most of the opportunity. He recorded five total tackles and one for loss and you heard his name called quite a bit on the broadcast.

With Ramirez likely out for a lengthy amount of time, DeRuyter and the defense will need more of the same from Matthews.

Dadrion Taylor-Demerson:

Rabbit had his bell rung late in the third quarter and made a touchdown saving play at the goal line a few plays later after he returned.

He knocked the ball out of Demie Sumo-Karngbaye’s hands through the end zone for a touchback when he had a clear path to score, a huge momentum shifter at the time as it kept the Red Raiders within two scores with a quarter to play.

One of the leaders on the defense came through and he stood out in an overall great performance from the Tech defense.

Touchdown drive in the 4th quarter:

The offense was bad last night, but this one drive made it even more frustrating to me because they showed that they can do it. The confidence level on Smith during this drive was different as well, just all an all-around great drive from the offense.

After you go down 27-7 and the offense being stagnant all night long, whether that’s due to play call, personnel, or execution, you’re able to glide down the field for 75 yards and a touchdown.

It seriously looked like a different offense than the one I was watching throughout the rest of the game. Everything was fluid, Kittley seemed to be calling some of the things he wanted to be calling and they moved the ball with little to no trouble.

The play call on the touchdown is *chef’s kiss*.

Disliked

The Pick Six & Donovan Smith:

First, here’s the tape of the throw.

I truly don’t know who this throw was intended for; either Xavier White ran the wrong route or Brady Boyd was extremely overthrown because there was nobody even close to where this ball went. I also want to mention how WIDE OPEN Myles Price is over the middle.

This really sealed the deal in retrospect, Tech was moving the ball for the first time and its all undone by this throw. It took away any momentum the Red Raiders had going their way.

Last night, Donovan seemed uncomfortable and has a lot of work to do if the Red Raiders are going to go very far. The reads are slow, and the pocket presence just isn’t up to par. He has all the talent; it just needs to come together, and quickly.

Timid offense first three quarters:

I think this had something to do with Kittley’s view on the offensive line and even his outlook on Smith.

The offense felt very sluggish up to the aforementioned drive in the fourth quarter and didn’t seem like the same thing that Kittley ran in the past.

Whether this be due to talent or just the scheme itself, someone has to make an adjustment if they have any chance this weekend.

Special Teams:

Boy, special teams killed the Red Raiders once again.

The muffed punt is a back breaker and can’t happen at anytime much less against a ranked opponent on the road. Frye, the main return man, was out last night but against Houston he wasn’t much better.

You eliminate the pick-six and the muffed punt, and you have a tie game going into half-time. This game came down to five plays and four of them went in the way of NC State which ultimately won them the game.

Clock Management (Three timeouts when NC State has 4th & 12 with 2:40 left in the 4th)

This has already been much discussed on here but I think coach McGuire could’ve used his timeouts down the stretch.

I don’t want to call it giving up, because I don’t think that is the correct wording, but it sure felt like it.

Maybe if the 4th & 8 early in the fourth quarter had a more favorable outcome, we would’ve seen a different story play out.

Injuries

Man, that Bryce Ramirez injury was horrific and all I can say his that I’m praying for a speedy recovery from the junior. He worked so hard to get back, dealing with some lingering stuff in camp, and to see that it’s just horrible.

Hopefully the likes of Taylor-Demerson and Muddy Waters are able to shake off their minor stuff during the week and get back for Saturday against Texas.
