STORY: Players Notebook: "We don't want to let y'all down" - Myles Price

Trey Wolff, Reggie Pearson, Donovan Smith and Myles Price addressed the media after the big win:

- Trey Wolff said the first field goal he knew was going to happen based on time and how the offense drove down the field. He said he was confident in the entire machine of the field goal team. He nailed it in regulation but knew not to look ahead until the final whistle of the game. Then the second one happened and it was time to celebrate.

- Pearson said a lot of the first half he felt they weren't communication too well. They made some mistakes and just weren't doing what they were supposed to do for each other. At halftime, they talked and made adjustments to get it together in the second half. They told the offense during the comeback that they would do everything to get them the ball.

- Reggie said they knew Xavier Worthy was Texas' big deep threat target. He knew that especially when he snatched that interception. He said 90% of the time on that specific play design they go to Worthy. He read it and made the play.

- How much was of a fight was it for Reggie on the fumble: "Oh, it wasn't a fight." He said there was a lineman right next to him but he knew he had to just jump on the ball.

- Trey said coach McGuire's "what's next?" mentality helped him mentally in moving forward and not looking back on the misses. He said whether it's a good or bad moment it's all about what's next. He didn't linger on the kick out of bounds this game and just moved forward.

- Trey talked about his recent marriage a bit. Biggest takeaways there is she's a Red Raider and they met at Tech. Congrats to him.

- Myles Price said he and the team knew they couldn't let one of the best crowds at the Jones down. They knew they had to come up with the win. He admitted that he knows they've dropped games like this in the past. But they're past doing that. This team will fight.

- Myles said it shouldn't have gone to overtime but "it be like that sometimes."

- Myles said they all knew to go make a play regardless of what happened before.

- Myles talked about the crowd and thanked them. This is the first time he played in front of a sold out crowd. The energy made them want to go out and win for the fans.

- Myles said the coaching staff going for it on fourth down on manageable situations gives the offense a sense of pride. He knows they trust them to make the play. He said he would be going for it too if he was coaching.

- Donovan said it starts in practice in preparation. He said they did a great job doing that all week. That transitioned to the field.

- Coach McGuire told them to "take the logo off the helmet" when talking about a hyped Texas game. Donovan said they study film and everything the same for each opponent. But, when the logo is there you do know the teams you want to really beat, Donovan said. Texas is one of them especially from last year with people still posting that on social media.

- Donovan said he knew he was going to Trey Cleveland on the offsides, free play before the snap. He was taking the shot regardless of the penalty.

- Mason Tharp and Baylor Cupp are versatile. Donovan said they've developed really well and today they showed their a threat on the offense as well just like the running backs and receivers.

- Donovan said his dad would be mad at him on the third down run when he slipped before the end zone. He said they knew they had to finish as a team though and took care of the ball until the Trey Wolff finish.

What I think Happens Saturday Against Texas (pres. by FHIP)

There's quite a bit of negativity surrounding this game. I think some of it is warranted -- through 2 games, we're on pace to have a historically bad Air Raid era offense. That doesn't stoke a lot of confidence against a team that's scored over 60 points the last two games against Tech.

I haven't seen one Tech fan that thinks the 7-point line is too high. Not one.

But there's a reason why Tech's being given a healthy chance to win this game (30ish%) by the betting market.

We're playing at home. Our defense is for real. And UT's overrated. They aren't as good as they looked against Alabama. Their skill guys sure are. But their OL can be had, and the inexperienced QB room is facing what will be one of their toughest tests of the season. We're going to get some stops.

However, it's hard to imagine running the ball via hand-offs suddenly working this game. It's also hard to imagine our OL being able to consistently protect in obvious passing situations. As a result, it's going to be the Donovan Smith show. I think a Tech win requires one of the best games of his career. And that's a tough thing to predict happening. I do think he plays the best game of this young season, just that it's not quite enough....

Texas 31
Tech 30

I hope I'm wrong. Playing an in-state rival for the last time at home is weird. A win in this game really would pay dividends for decades. Would definitely exercise most of the demons that I still have floating around from the 2009 loss to A&M.

FHIP -- while not the best Tech sports podcast (hell, it's not even top 30) -- is the only podcast in the world dedicated to Redraidersports subscribers. All other podcasts (which are way better than FHIP) are for your average, run-of-the-mill Tech sports fans. Those podcasts are for the peasants. Not FHIP. FHIP is made for you by people like you. The hosts watch all the football games and approximately 1/3rd of the basketball games.

Veteran Leadership

In his interview after the game with Level he said he met with his veterans last night and told them that he needed them to step up and make plays...that's what great players do. Thenhe said that Krishon was one of them and he reminded Joey of that saying "That's what great players do".

If you don't think this HC is leading the way, if you don't think what this team is learning will make a difference sooner than later, then you don't know football.
